Ombre (Shade Gradient) Nail Art Tutorial

So today I tried a type of nail art look called Ombre. This is when you basically pick one color in five shades, ranging from light to dark. Then you paint each nail a color to get a gradient shade progression effect. This one isn’t as “in your face” as other nail art looks with patterns, and you can really determine how dramatic you want to go with it. I personally like it best when the shades are very close and in the same color so that the gradient isn’t as drastic. Otherwise, it could end up looking like you just painted each nail a random color when the effect you are trying to get is actually a shading of light to dark or even one color gradually transitioning to another.

I got my inspiration when I opened my newest Cosmo, and saw this cool pic (as well as some others I may try later on).

“Purple Haze Ombre” Cosmo Vol. 252, No. 2 pg. 185

Here’s another inspiration pic of Lauren Conrad sporting the Ombre look in blue.

You can go really either way, light on thumb to dark pinky as I did in my nail art gradient ombre tutorial, or reverse it. There’s really no rules, and you can get as creative as you want! It’s actually a lot easier than it looks, and here’s proof in my first ever attempt! I was also being lazy and didn’t use 5 store-bought colors which would have made it a lot easier. Instead, I just grabbed colors I already had (4 colors), and mixed them to get the shading effect.I think it turned out pretty good, and I ended up getting a lot of compliments! How do you think it turned out?

I would LOVE to see your creative take on the Ombre nail art trend. Leave me a comment linking to your pic or simply let me know what colors you’d use for this look.

Sexy Matte Red Lips

I used to be a little intimidated by bright lips, maybe because I’ve been a dancer for many years and this was always a part of “stage makeup.” Plus, I’d always prefered playing up the eyes as opposed to lips, and you really should not do both at the same time because you’ll look majorly overdone.

However, I’m sure you’ve noticed that bright colors in fashion and makeup are making a major comeback, along with the classic red lip I was dying to try. This is a great look for holidays, winter season, date nights, and anytime you want to punch up your style with a color statement.

See what I’m talking about?

KIDDING!!!

Ok, so for normal girls wanting to sport this statement look on more of an everyday basis, I wanted to give it a whirl. Here’s some inspiration images I started with:

I really love how neutral the rest of Rachel McAdams’ face is, making the look clean, fresh, and lips center stage!

One big thing I’m seeing and loving is the fact that this red lip is matte (not shiny). I think that gives it a fresher look, is more versatile from day to night (bold + shiny to me is  just a nighttime look), and minimizes getting lipstick on the teeth, hair sticking to the lips, and basically getting it all over everything.

Here’s a tutorial of how I did my perfect sexy matte red lip look:

I actually already had this great REDD lipliner from MAC in my makeup arsenal from my dancer days, and found this awesome matte lipstick from INGLOT (shade #408 – looks much brighter/redder in person).

Last weekend, I wore it out for the first time on a date night with the hubby, and I gotta tell you it makes a girl feel really glamorous. And a bonus I love? Your teeth look extra white! I highly recommend you trying this look. Just make sure to pack a small mirror and lipstick for possible touch ups throughout the night.

Red lips and red wine with the hubs!

Dying to know what you think! Have you tried a sexy red matte lip already or will you try it now?

Hello Beauties!

Hi Everyone! I figured I would do an introductory post as this is the first official post for Style Trials!

My name is Kristen (a.k.a. Krissy), and I’m an artistic kinda girl who has an eye for makeup, beauty, fashion, home decor, and basically anything associated with style! I tend to have a natural knack for aesthetics, and have experience through my journeys of painting, dancing/cheering for professional sports teams, modeling, and obtaining an Interior Design degree. I have been trying numerous products and beauty tips over the years, and definitely have a lot of knowledge and some favs I want need to share with the world. This blog will cover those tried and true suggestions that I hope you’ll love as well.

Now I don’t claim to know everything, and am always curious in testing the latest trends/beauty tips. So with that, my other goal for this blog is to bring you ideas I take from “Pros,” and report how doable they are to an average girl–that girl without the beauty team behind the scenes. Are they worth your time/money? Did I come across any obstacles that may help in your own quest? And most importantly, do they work? I’ll be reviewing all of the good and sometimes ridiculousness here. 🙂

Above all, I’m looking forward to hearing from you! I would love to hear about “the latest hairstyle you’re craving to try from page 9 of that oh-so-wonderful beauty mag,” or even offer some guidance with style questions you may have. If you have any requests/questions, please feel free to email me at Kristen@StyleTrials.com or tweet to @mystyletrials.

To all you beauties reading this….. Here’s to testing and reporting everything stylish!
