Review and Freebie: Coastal.com and Derek Cardigan Eyeglasses!

This post brought to you by Coastal.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

Eyeglasses used to be the bane of fashion, but now it’s become a trendy accessory. So much so that you see celebrities sporting glasses even if they don’t need them, or people buying multiple pairs to wear different styles with different outfits. If you’ve been following me for awhile, then you read about my quest for the perfect pair of nerdy chic, hipster eyeglasses. Then I recently got LASIK, and didn’t necessarily need those glasses anymore. I was sad because I still thought they were cute and wanted to wear them on occasion, but adding non-prescription lenses to those Raybans would be more than $100….crazy! That’s why I was so excited to have this opportunity to pick a different pair of glasses for free from Coastal.com. I have to tell you about this awesome experience, and how YOU too can get a free pair of Designer Eyeglasses!

Listen up people! 🙂

I’ve never tried purchasing eyeglass or sunglasses online before (it kind of intimidated me), but this was a really easy buying experience. Coastal.com has become the largest online retailer of eyeglasses and contact lenses in North America, and I could definitely see why! They have all of the big designer brands/products offered in stores, but for half the price. They also deliver directly to your home, and offer prescription glasses, non-prescription glasses, and even sunglasses. I specifically LOVE their line of Derek Cardigan Eyeglasses for men and women, which are classically vintage inspired, yet trendy. They have a ton of different styles and color options, like this!

Since I already had a pair of eyeglasses with a square frame, I wanted something completely different. I was thinking maybe a color like fuschia, or just a different shape. I was really gravitating towards the cateye glasses, and they had a few different Derek Cardigan cateye options. I uploaded a photo of myself and used their virtual tool online to “try on” a few pairs.

I decided this cateye style 7019 in Dark Timber was the winner. Just cateye enough, but not too over-the-top so I could still wear them to work.

Derek Cardigan 7019 Black | Derek Cardigan Glasses - Coastal.com®-1When ordering, you fill out your prescription per eye, and pick the type of lense you want (sunglass, regular, bifocal, extra thin, etc). All lenses come with anti-scratch and anti-glare. I ended up having a quick question since I was ordering non-prescription glasses, and I simply used their live chat. Super easy!

My glasses arrived in the mail about 2 weeks later. They came in a nice case with a cleaner and eyeglass tool kit.

I love how Derek Cardigan puts different math symbols on his frames. This style has a colon and a semi-colon…I’m so easily amused! Now prepare for a selfie photo shoot.

Candy Colors, Pastel, and Snakeskin Print

Spring is here, and that means pastels and candy colors are sweetening up the stores! Try mixing candy colors/pastels with a snakeskin print accessory (or piece of clothing) to balance out the sweetness a bit. Limit it to one snakeskin printed item per outfit so you don’t overkill it.

I especially like this look mixed with coral, mint green, pale blues, lavender, or even lace texture! Here’s the Style Trials inspiration board:

Snakeskin, Pastels, and Candy Combos

Astr lace cocktail dress / Metropolis mint dress / Joie sweater / Blue jacket / Rare London sequin bodycon skirt, $51 / Tulle skirt, $26 / American Eagle Outfitters / Pour La Victoire pumps / Rachel Zoe / Blink platform shoes, $76 / Dolce & Gabbana colorful handbag, $1,445 / Clutch / UNEARTHED imitation jewelry / GUESS bracelet / Coach bracelet jewelry / Mint earrings / Tory Burch stud earrings / Essie nail polish, $12 / Mint Green Stripe Short Paper Milkshake Straws | Milkshake Straws |… / Maxi colar ovais candy colors / Essie Camera, $15
You may have noticed me posting on instagram a few key pieces I picked up myself!

Pastel nails of course are still really popular too, and tend to look great on all skin tones.
This style combo is a fresh take for Spring, and especially for upcoming Easter. But remember, you don’t want to look like an Easter egg, so limit yourself to a few key pieces, mix in some neutrals (nude, white, black, and/or metallics), and toughen it up with a print like snakeskin.

Transform your Wardrobe with No nonsense Tights and Leggings

This post brought to you by No nonsense. All opinions are 100% mine.

I’ve had lots of people say to me, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wear the same outfit twice!” Well, I definitely do, but I have little tricks to help. One of the ways you can make your wardrobe appear endless is by styling things differently. For example, you can completely change the look of an outfit by adding tights and leggings, especially if they are a cool color/texture. It’s literally style made easy!

So you can imagine my excitement when I received a pair of No nonsense tights and leggings to try out. They surprised me with a pair of jean leggings (a.k.a jeggings) and opaque citron colored tights.

One of my favorite things is that No nonsense tights and leggings can be found in places like food and drug stores, so you can quickly pick something up without having to do a big shopping trip (although they are also sold in major retail stores). I put together a casual outfit and a dressier outfit for each item to show how you can completely change a look. Check it out….

No nonsense Denim Leggings

My thoughts on the jean leggings were that they are super soft and comfy. Although the size I received was a little big (I like my leggings really fitted), these definitely still worked and I was happy to see they were long enough to fit my 5’7″ frame. The length was actually perfect because as you can see, I could wear them with heels or boots. The denim color was also great and had a nice sheen that could be dressed up or down. They had a mid-rise sitting right below my belly button, and I liked how they didn’t cut me off at the waist like some other leggings (nobody wants the dreaded “muffin top!”).

One last thing is that I typically only wear leggings with long shirts, but I wanted to go “jean on jean” with my casual outfit, which happened to be a shorter shirt. I think it works because these leggings are actually pretty thick, so they kinda look like jeans without pockets. They’ don’t go “see through” when you bend down and such, so in my opinion they’re more flattering than thin leggings which can cheapen a look.

 No nonsense Tights

Ahh, what can I say…I love me a good pair of opaque tights! This color was so unique and something I probably wouldn’t have picked out myself, but I ended up really liking it because it’s so bold! I loved that the tights were really opaque and again, SUPER soft and warm. Like, “you’ve gotta feel ’em” soft.

I also loved that I could take my Summer clothes like shorts, and make them Wintery by adding these punchy tights. There’s also a bit of a control top which is nice, and the Medium was perfect for my height.

For additional style points, try keeping the rest of the outfit neutral and adding one other colorful accessory to compliment the colorful tights. Like a bright lip, bracelet, purse, or heels!

Outfit of the Day 3: Printed Pants

Hello Style Trialers! As I’m sure you can imagine, I have been busy, busy catching up and unpacking at the new house. Not to mention the holidays! But that hasn’t stopped me. I have been Style Trialing along the way, and have a lot of great posts ready for you! Including a lot more OOTDs meant for inspiration.

This OOTD is all about prints and pattern. I have always loved  prints in fashion and interior design, especially mixing patterns. Some great complimentary patterns include a free flowing type of design (i.e. floral, damask, etc) with a geometric uniform pattern (i.e. stripes, polka dots, chevron, etc), or pairing a large print with a similar mini print. While I admit mixing print on print can be a little more difficult in fashion, you can still achieve a fashion forward look by mixing a bold printed bottom with a solid or textured top.

Printed pants or patterned leggings are really trendy right now. Because I love trying new things and taking fashion risks, I wanted to find a pair that wouldn’t break the bank. I found a cool pair of patterned jeans at Forever 21, where they had a slew of printed pants under $25!

Here’s my Printed Pants OOTD:

Style Trials Instagram Printed Pants OOTD

Style Trials Printed Jeans

  • Oversized, black knit sweater – Express
  • Printed Jeans – Forever XXI
  • Layered Statement Necklace – Yard Sale find and only cost $0.50, that’s right! Score! 🙂
  • Black motorcycle boots – Target

Here’s a few other inexpensive, cool options I found for you:

The only annoying thing about printed pants/leggings is that because it’s so eye-catching, you can’t wear them on a regular basis like a normal pair of jeans. I’ve learned sometimes you just have to give in – fashion can’t always be practical (and often isn’t)! Find an inexpensive pair of patterned pants, and make the outfit different by pairing with various tops. This could be a different shirt color, texture, or even (*gasp*) attempting the print on print look.

For example, you can see I gave my outfit more of a funky vibe by pairing it with an over-sized sweater and motorcycle boots. However, I could easily make this a dressier outfit if I paired it with heels (maybe even bright colored heels, hmmmm) and a different top. The styling with these bottoms really is endless, so you can definitely wear them multiple times making the outfit look different.

Do you have a pair of printed pants or leggings? Would you try this look?

Outfit of the Day 2: Day to Night

This OOTD is kind of a 2-in-1 and has already received some great response on Style Trial’s Youtube channel! It’s a play on the “leather” trend (okay, I hate the word pleather) that’s so popular right now. Wearing the look of leather is tricky enough when incorporating it into a work appropriate outfit, but I don’t stop there. I also show how to take this sassy look from work casual to nighttime chic in a snap! I personally know it can be a challenge when working on a Friday, then having to look cute for going out directly after. This is a good example of how you can restyle an outfit to transition from day to night.

ST Outfit of the Day 2: Day to Night

  • Pleather pleated skirt – Forever 21
  • “Bonjour” Tank Top – H&M
  • Gray knit sweater – Express
  • Tory Burch Black Reva Ballet Flats with Gold Buckle
  • Stella & Dot Gold Stacking Bracelets
  • Suede black booties – Payless
  • Red Lipstick Tutorial
  • Necklace – White House Black Market
  • Hairstyle – Bun Tutorial

The key is pre-planning before you leave so you can effectively layer clothes (i.e. Bonjour tank top under work sweater), plus pack anything for the transition before you leave the house. As the video shows, I’d suggest these things so you can pack light and maybe even fit everything in your purse:

  1. Punchy lip color or eyeshadow (or any bolder makeup you want to apply after work
  2. Statement jewelry
  3. Shoes to dress it up or give the outfit a different feel
  4. *OPTIONAL* If the work purse just doesn’t fit with the night look, grab a small clutch too

Here’s a few full length shots:

Work Casual to begin with…

…easily mixed up for a night on the town!

Have you embraced the “look of leather,” or pleather (ek) look? What is your #1 must pack beauty or fashion item for transitioning a look from day to night?

Let’s Talk Bras! Fashion Challenges and Fixes

One of my pet peeves is not wearing the proper undergarments. So in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we’re gonna talk bras!

I’ve come across fashion challenges like “what kind of bra do I wear with this weird cutout dress thingy,” and have figured out the best up-top solutions to common girl problems. Why? Because wearing the wrong bra can put a damper on your entire outfit, but wearing the correct bra will make the outfit seamless. Now I’m not knocking the exposed bra as a trend, because if you’re trying to make a statement like Carrie Bradshaw on Sex & the City, then do just that. And I do like the sheer top with exposed bra trend, but that’s obviously on purpose so it’s not the same.

Photo rights: style.catalogs.com

If you’re not attempting to expose your straps on purpose and it doesn’t enhance the outfit, then it’s just comes off as sloppy. Here’s the most common fashion challenges and fixes to avoid a fashion faux pas.

Challenge 1: The Thin White T-Shirt

The Bra Fix

In thin shirts (even if it’s white), a white bra can stand out just as bad as a bright colored one. The trick is to get the bra in a nude color that closely matches your skin tone, and it will blend seamlessly especially when you wear white. Some places, like Victoria’s Secret, carry bras in multiple nude colors so you can get a close match.

The other part to this is having just a basic, seamless bra with no bells and whistles. You don’t want lace, patterns, or other embellishments (at least not on the cups) because that will show through and it will look like you have lumpy boobs. This VS Showstopper Demi Bra is a great example of what to wear, and I especially like the satiny fabric. Cotton bras tend to cling to your shirt, so when wearing a thin t-shirt I’ve found it’s better with a slick bra to avoid the cling.

Challenge 2: Exposed Back and Cutouts

The Bra Fix

I fondly call this backless Ultralite Nubra my “sticky boobs.” They have an adhesive that sticks to your skin without leaving any residue, and can be reused several times. You can even wash it lightly and it will stay sticky for more uses, until it eventually wears out.

The Nubra comes in nude and black, and works for a ton of tricky fashion situations. This has helped me with backless shirts/dresses, sheer or lace backed tops, and outfits with interesting cutouts. I do want to advise not to wear it instances where you’ll be really sweaty for a long period of time. I live in Florida, and found in those situations the “sticky boobs” turn into “slippery boobs.”

Challenge 3: Taking the Plunge

The Bra Fix

Love the plunge neckline but scared “the girls” will fall out? These tools will help prevent a potentially embarrassing situation. Since you can’t wear a normal bra or even Nubra because of the front plunge, you can use Braza Silicone Gel Petals  . They just adhere to that area to help smooth things out so it doesn’t look like you’re bra-less. The other key tool is Hollywood Fashion Tape. You can use fashion tape for lots of things, and it’s basically double sided sticky tape that works with most fabric. Just tape the inside of the neckline and secure the fabric to your skin. Viola! No slippage there. With this combination of fashion tools, you will be well equipped to take the plunge.

Outfit of the Day 1 – Girly meets Motorcycle Boots

Hi everyone! I’m starting a new series on Style Trials called “Outfit of the Day,” a.k.a. OOTD. Why? Because having a cool outfit is greatly due to how you style it…not necessarily the clothes themselves. It’s all about putting an entire look together. My goal is to give you ideas where you can take what I share and opt for the same stuff, or find something similar in your own closet and go for it! You’ll find I get creative with new, old, and some really old stuff (I tend to keep everything!), so I hope you enjoy this series!

To kick things off, I’m starting with a fun little Fall outfit where everything is under $50! That’s right, from top to bottom, including shoes (I scored them on clearance)! Check it out….

ST Outfit of the Day: 1

I could have easily paired this dress with simple ballet flats, but I thought “nah, let’s kick it up a notch.” The trick is mixing nice-girl stuff with bad-chick stuff that you wouldn’t necessarily think go together. Plus, short combat and motorcycle boots are really hot right now, and you can wear them with so much more than just this outfit. They’d be a great investment for Fall/Winter! Here’s a few options if you’re looking:

With this OOTD, I especially love how the dress has a vintage feel to it. I tend to gravitate towards retro inspired clothes. The style and floral print reminds me of something from the 60’s, and I paired it with a silver bird double-ring (both from Forever 21).

For my hair, I did a simple part down the middle (a la “Marsha Brady”), and kept the makeup simple, girly pink, and toned down. Although I did want to play up the 60’s vibe by winging my eyeliner out with a liquid liner.

I hope this OOTD gives some inspiration!

Let me know if you like this look and “Outfit of the Day” series. I’ll make sure to do more!
