Master Bedroom Makeover 1: New Bed, Bedding, and Mattress

When we moved into our first home, we knew right away we wanted to buy new Master bedroom furniture. We only had the hubby’s bed and dressers from college, and wanted to re-purpose those in our first guest room. We also had hopes of getting a new mattress and upgrading to a King Bed. Knowing me, this was a long process because I wanted to get it right and not just settle….and that meant figuring out exactly what it was I did want. I’m happy to say our Master is now my favorite room in our house! This will be broken up into a few posts, and I’m going to focus this on our first step. The actual bed makeover.

I knew I wanted a serene, hotel feel to the Master, and was literally stalking my favorite home decor website Joss & Main everyday. If you haven’t heard of Joss & Main, they have discounted high quality designer furniture and accessories, but it’s a flash sale site. That means their products are only on sale for a few days. I first spotted this awesome upholstered bed there, but didn’t purchase right away because they have a no-return policy. Instead, we actually bought the mattress first.

We got our mattress at Denver Mattress Company, part of Furniture Row. They had a bunch of designer mattresses ranging from Sealy to TEMPUR-Pedic, and a variety of styles ranging from inner-spring to memory foam. We shopped around layed around and found our perfect match – the Serta iComfort!

Here’s why we chose the iComfort® Sleep System by Serta®:

  • Made with revolutionary Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam – the world’s first memory foam infused with the support and cooling touch of Serta’s MicroSupport® gel.
  • Gel memory foam is designed to provide enhanced cooling comfort and more support where you need it for a cool, comfortable and supportive sleep experience.
  •  Serta offered a variety of iComfort models, and we went with iComfort Savant comfort level (in the middle, not too soft but not too hard)

I’m not going to pretend this mattress wasn’t expensive, but we figured a good mattress is an investment we should make and can last up to 20 years. After all, a human spends 1/3 of their life sleeping! Isn’t that crazy when you think about it?! We did upgrade to the King size, but opted out of the adjustable bed frame for now.

Next came the upholstered bed.

style trials skyline upholsetered bed with nail head

I seriously am in LOVE with this Skyline upholstered bed I found at Joss & Main , and it was a steal at around $700 for a King size bed (not just the headboard). Although Joss & Main is a flash sale site, I found that it’s not unusual for many items to be repeated throughout a month. My bed kept coming up, but I kept getting cold feet because I knew I couldn’t return it. I finally realized that Joss & Main is owned by Wayfair, and I could read customer reviews on my products there.

This Skyline bed got rav reviews, so I finally pulled the plug and purchased the Talc color. I admit I was still worried it may be a little too light in color, but it’s actually a really nice light linen color with tan cross-hatched fibers throughout. From a distance, it actually takes on a slightly light grey tone. I was also worried about getting the King size as I thought it may overpower the room, but found that because this bed is lower to the ground than our old Queen bed, it actually made the room look larger! I also love how the nail heads in this bed are individually placed, rather than a cheap trim that’s all attached.

Next came the bedding.

I looked high and low for a pattern I liked. Seriously, I looked at Macy’s, West Elm, ZGallarie, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ross and Marshalls, Kohl’s, and Bed Bath & Beyond. I fell in love with this serene Barbara Barry Poetical duvet at BBB. It was light, neutral, had interest because of the pattern, and was dark enough to contrast with the upholstered bed. Since I live in Florida but like a little weight in a comforter, I filled it with Macy’s Hotel Collection Primaloft All Season Comforter.  I preferred down alternative not only for the price, but also because I wanted to be able to wash it. It’s worked out great so far.

To go along with my bedding, I wanted to add a little “glam” with silky tones and a hint of color. I found the perfect quilt or coverlet also at Bed Bath & Beyond, which happened to also be by Barbara Barry and actually called Glamour! Haha, perfect!

Style Trials Bed Makeover Barbara Barry glamour quilt coverlet

I think this definitely adds a little interest to the combo, and makes the bed more luxurious. I also purchased 2 matching accent pillows. Master King Bed Makeover Skyline Upholstered Barbara Barry poetical style trials 3

Here’s a shot of the room BEFORE, then after the bed was added but everything else was still the same. I had some big plans for the windows, dressers, nightstands, lamps, etc. There’s been SO much more done since then, so you’ll have to make sure to subscribe to Style Trials (and click the verification link in the email it sends you) so you don’t miss the full view!

6 Steps to the Perfect Bridal Shower

Special thanks to Gigis Cupcakes who provided the cupcakes for this event. All opinions are 100% mine.

This past weekend I helped throw a bridal shower for my beautiful older sister, Danielle. While going through this process of co-hosting as sister and Matron of Honor, I narrowed down 6 steps to share that helped make this the perfect bridal shower.

1.) THEME

Picking a theme sets the tone for the shower, and will keep it a memorable experience for all. Try to pick something relevant to the bride, whether it’s based on a favorite motif, location, the Bride’s heritage, or simply color scheme.

For Danielle, we went with a girly Paris themed bridal shower (based on a  sister trip we took to Paris) which was complimented with black, pale pinks, and white details. Choosing a color scheme and sticking to it also helps tie together the theme.

style trials paris themed bridal shower details and banner

Zazzle paris fleur de lis bridal shower invites

2.) INVITES

The invites should also go with the theme.

For types of invites, you can go eco-friendly with an evite, or find good options online at places like MagnetStreet, Wedding Paper Divas, or Zazzle.

*Bonus Tip*

Many times you can find a Groupon or similar daily deal for places like Zazzle or Vistaprint. Also, if you’ve narrowed down the style and aren’t crunched for time, make sure to signup for emails from that site so you can purchase when a promo is running. If it’s around the holidays, there will be really discounted promotions for Holiday Cards, which you can really use for any cards, such as shower invites (I’ve seen up to 75% off!).

We went with this fleur de lis invite from Zazzle, which matched the banner you saw in the picture above.

3.) THEMED FOOD

We hired a local caterer, and selected menu items to go with a Parisian theme. The menu included a variety of mini croissant sandwiches, cheese and fruit, baked brie, stuffed mushrooms, and mini quiches.

4.) SHOWSTOPPING DESSERT!

Let’s be honest. Women LOVE dessert…so make it memorable! I dedicated an entire table to really highlight the dessert, and put it in the location where we planned to open presents – right next to the Bride’s chair. My friends at Gigi’s Cupcakes in Orlando provided an awesome mix of full-size and mini cupcakes, creating a fun “Eiffel” cupcake tower! Guests were literally salivating over these gorgeous cupcakes.

We kept the flavors classic: White cake and pink butter cream frosting, and chocolate cake with cream cheese icing. Delish! I especially loved the candy pearls and crystal sugar on top.

5.) GAMES AND ACTIVITES

The wonderful bridesmaids focused on a series of games/activities, giving away Paris themed prizes. We spread out them out throughout the event, so people were entertained from start to finish.

  • Unique Guest Book: In lieu of a traditional guest book, we did something a little more creative. As guests entered, we took their photo and they were directed to write a note to the bride. Afterwards, we’ll mount the photo of each guest along with their note in the custom Paris notebook.
  • Newlywed Trivia Game: This is a funny activity for the group to watch and learn a little more about the bride and groom. Before the shower, we asked the groom a series of questions about their relationship and had his answers prepared. At the shower, Danielle was surprised with the series of questions, and had to answer them out loud to the group. For ever question she got wrong, we made her chew bubble gum until she had a whole cheek full!
  • Love Song Game: Guests were tasked with writing down as many songs they could think of that had the word “love” in the title. The one with the most answers won. The hitch? The winner had to sing a line or two from each song to prove they knew it!
  • Purse Game: This is a classically fun game. A list of random items were put on a sheet with a point value association. The more unique the item, the more points. Guests rummaged through their purses and marked off what was in it. The one with the most points won!
  • Slideshow: The groom actually surprised my sister with a beautiful slideshow for all to watch at the shower! It definitely made her shed a few tears. 🙂

6.) DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS!

It’s the little details that will help keep your theme together and make this something guests will remember. Since we were going with a Parisian theme, we used Eiffel Towers, fleur de lis, “ooh la las,” and “amour” motifs. The banner in the first picture (from Vistaprint) helped personalize the party to Danielle, and became a great photo spot. Checkout a few other details:

Let’s Talk Bras! Fashion Challenges and Fixes

One of my pet peeves is not wearing the proper undergarments. So in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we’re gonna talk bras!

I’ve come across fashion challenges like “what kind of bra do I wear with this weird cutout dress thingy,” and have figured out the best up-top solutions to common girl problems. Why? Because wearing the wrong bra can put a damper on your entire outfit, but wearing the correct bra will make the outfit seamless. Now I’m not knocking the exposed bra as a trend, because if you’re trying to make a statement like Carrie Bradshaw on Sex & the City, then do just that. And I do like the sheer top with exposed bra trend, but that’s obviously on purpose so it’s not the same.

Photo rights: style.catalogs.com

If you’re not attempting to expose your straps on purpose and it doesn’t enhance the outfit, then it’s just comes off as sloppy. Here’s the most common fashion challenges and fixes to avoid a fashion faux pas.

Challenge 1: The Thin White T-Shirt

The Bra Fix

In thin shirts (even if it’s white), a white bra can stand out just as bad as a bright colored one. The trick is to get the bra in a nude color that closely matches your skin tone, and it will blend seamlessly especially when you wear white. Some places, like Victoria’s Secret, carry bras in multiple nude colors so you can get a close match.

The other part to this is having just a basic, seamless bra with no bells and whistles. You don’t want lace, patterns, or other embellishments (at least not on the cups) because that will show through and it will look like you have lumpy boobs. This VS Showstopper Demi Bra is a great example of what to wear, and I especially like the satiny fabric. Cotton bras tend to cling to your shirt, so when wearing a thin t-shirt I’ve found it’s better with a slick bra to avoid the cling.

Challenge 2: Exposed Back and Cutouts

The Bra Fix

I fondly call this backless Ultralite Nubra my “sticky boobs.” They have an adhesive that sticks to your skin without leaving any residue, and can be reused several times. You can even wash it lightly and it will stay sticky for more uses, until it eventually wears out.

The Nubra comes in nude and black, and works for a ton of tricky fashion situations. This has helped me with backless shirts/dresses, sheer or lace backed tops, and outfits with interesting cutouts. I do want to advise not to wear it instances where you’ll be really sweaty for a long period of time. I live in Florida, and found in those situations the “sticky boobs” turn into “slippery boobs.”

Challenge 3: Taking the Plunge

The Bra Fix

Love the plunge neckline but scared “the girls” will fall out? These tools will help prevent a potentially embarrassing situation. Since you can’t wear a normal bra or even Nubra because of the front plunge, you can use Braza Silicone Gel Petals  . They just adhere to that area to help smooth things out so it doesn’t look like you’re bra-less. The other key tool is Hollywood Fashion Tape. You can use fashion tape for lots of things, and it’s basically double sided sticky tape that works with most fabric. Just tape the inside of the neckline and secure the fabric to your skin. Viola! No slippage there. With this combination of fashion tools, you will be well equipped to take the plunge.

What to Wear to a Concert #iHeartRadio

In case you didn’t see my excitement on Twitter and Facebook, I have some BIG news! I won a trip to the #iHeartRadio Music Festival, in LAS VEGAS!!! OMG, right?

It happened last month  when I was listening to Johnny’s House on the radio (the morning show) on XL 106.7. It was a nationwide contest, and I texted the keyword to be randomly selected as the winner!

The text that won me a trip to the #iheartradio Music Festival in Las Vegas! Everyone who texted in received this response that I won!

It was like winning the lottery! The Hubby and I love Vegas to begin with, and this was going to be such a huge, iconic concert already sold out to the public. I couldn’t believe it! You can actually hear my voice in this promo sound clip created by #iheartradio! I’m in there twice. Did you hear it? Kinda a fun game. On top of that, Johnny’s House interviewed me on the radio about winning, which was an awesome experience!

The concert was last weekend (Sept. 21st and 22nd), and was held at the MGM Grand hotel. My prize included a trip for two (yay, Hubby got to go) with airfare, transportation to the hotel, 2 nights at the MGM Grand, and 2 tickets to the festival for each night.

When we got to Vegas, there was a person holding a sign for the winners to get to their bus. The bus took us to our hotel VIP style! 🙂

Is it obvious that’s normally not “how I roll”? I started a frenzy of photos with other winners after this. Poor guy holding the sign!

They specially wrapped the bus for us! So cool!

The MGM Grand is an awesome hotel on the Vegas strip, and it was exceptionally great because I could just get ready, then head downstairs and not worry about taxis. Here’s a pic of the room…

After a 5 hour 6 am flight, I celebrated by doing a running belly flop onto the giant bed in our room. It had to be done.

So now I was tasked with what the heck to wear to this concert! I learned that we had actual seats, so to me that translated into being able to wear heels because I wouldn’t have to stand the whole time. Otherwise, I would have planned my entire outfit around wearing flat shoes.  That’s definitely something for you to consider when going to a concert, because the worst thing is being uncomfortable and not being able to enjoy the show!

First night my inspiration was “Glam meet Rock.”

NIGHT 1: Glam Meets Rock

I tried to take a creative shot with the city in the background!

Glam meets Rock!

To achieve this look, simply mix really delicate, feminine motifs (i.e. lace, ribbons, sheer, sparkle, shine) with harsher, masculine motifs (i.e. boots, studs, spikes, denim).

My second look was more girly. I was going for “Jenny from Forrest Gump in the 70’s” in a modern way. LOL, I know. In this case I found the shirt as initial inspiration, which led me to that vision.

Night 2: Modern 70’s Disco Queen

Modern 70’s Disco Look

I love how the sequins on this top are really small and not chunky.

To do this, I found my one key piece that screamed modern 70’s, the sequined gold top, then worked around that. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, but I got a lot of compliments and felt pretty in this outfit. Also, my brown smokey eye went perfect with both looks!

And of course I couldn’t leave you without some awesome pics of the concert! My highlights of the concert were the No Doubt/Pink duet of “Just a Girl,” Pink flying over the crowd while flipping and singing, Greenday freaking out and smashing their guitars, the surprise visit from Prince, Taylor Swift being adorable with her banjo, Aerosmith singing “Cryin’,” and surprise presenters Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Ryan Seacrest. And that’s just some of the highlights! Honestly, it just kept getting better and better as there were a TON of surprises.

The iheartradio 2012 Lineup!

ALL of Vegas was decked out in iHeartRadio promotions, especially the MGM Grand!

Getting ready to head into the concert the first night!

Counting down to the start of the show!

Gwen Stefani and Pink’s duet to “Just a Girl.”

Everyone got glow bracelets. They automatically lit up to the music beats!

The arena looked AWESOME for DeadMau5!

Taylor Swift being adorbs.

Pink literally flew over the audience and did flips. You’ve gotta see this!

Bon Jovi “It’s My Life” performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.

Before Billie Joe Armstrong’s rant at the iHeartRadio music festival.

Shortly after this pic, we snuck into the lower level! Shhh! 🙂

You can see more and professional iHeartRadio Music Festival 2012 pictures here. It was definitely the trip of a lifetime, and I’m so thankful I got that opportunity!

Sad you missed it? Don’t worry! You can catch the premier of the concert airing on TV (CW network) Monday, October 1st from  8:00 pm – 10:00 pm.

So I’ll leave you with this….

What do you like to wear to concerts? Which of my looks do you like the best?

Cruise and Beach Vacation Essentials – Stock Up On End of Summer Sales!

Cruises, beaches, tropical resorts! You’re probably wondering why I’m doing this post going into Fall, huh? In my attempt to hang onto the last bits of Summer, I actually have good reasoning beyond that. Here’s why!

  1. Summer is ending so now is the time to find great stuff on clearance and stock up for next year.
  2. I live in Florida so it’s still 90+ degree beach weather!
  3. Most importantly, my husband Gary and I are celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary NEXT WEEK (yayyy!) on an 8-day Carnival cruise! SOO EXCITED!!! 🙂 While cruises are definitely top of my mind right now, I actually know a lot of other people who are going/just went on a cruise too. Makes sense because you can find great deals on cruises in the off-season.

Whatever the case, my universal problem with traveling has always been packing because, let’s face it, I pack way too much….I like options! So I thought long and hard to narrow the essential must-have pieces for a cruise or really any other beachy, tropical getaway. You can use this as a packing guide, or inspiration for items to hunt during these end-of-season sales.

CRUISE WEAR

Obviously it doesn’t have to be these exact pieces, but this is a general idea of basics to include. A few tank tops and shorts, a casual sundress, a swimsuit coverup, a nicer outfit you can dress up or down (like the romper), comfy flip flops, and dressier shoes that still look casual (platform wedges).

You’ll want to accessorize with a bag that is fairly neutral so you can wear it with everything, cool sunglasses, and a straw beach hat. Of course you’ll need a few bikini options, and I’d suggest mix-and-match bikinis so you can get more looks out of less pieces. Victoria’s Secret is actually having an end-of season sale right now on their swimwear, so I’d suggest checking it out! I just stocked up.

WHAT’S IN MY CRUISE BEAUTY BAG

If you’re like me and don’t want to be pale in a bikini, you should checkout the Style Trials Bronze Skin Series for the BEST Self tanners.

I just want to leave you with one last thing. Have a great Labor Day weekend, and think of me while I’M ON A BOAT!

Yeeeep, I just went there. 🙂

What are your  top fashion and beauty items when packing for a vacation getaway? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Bronze Skin Series 1 – The BEST Self-Tanners

Sun tanning became popular in the 1920’s when fashion designer Coco Chanel got burnt vacationing on the French Riviera. Thus, resulting in her famous tan. As the oddball of being the only light haired, fair-skinned girl in my family, I always longed for this beautiful, bronzy skin. Alas, I grew up having to wear embarrassing t-shirts over my swimsuit because my skin burned so bad.

Now that it’s known that a “healthy looking tan” is really NOT healthy (eww to damaging wrinkles and skin spots), I am grateful my Mother doused me in sunscreen to protect my skin. With pale complected beauties becoming more popular now (think Anne Hathaway), porcelain skin tones are becoming “cool” again.

Megan Fox Tan versus Pale

Still, I think many people will agree that when you are exposing a lot of skin during the warm months, they would prefer to be tan over pale. This is why I’m a HUGE advocate of self-tanners. They give you a glowy, even skin tone, improves the appearance of lumps and bumps, and personally makes me feel thinner in a swimsuit. Weird but true! Because of this, I have tried every kind of self-tanner out there, and have A TON  of tips and tricks I want  to share!

If I did this all in one post, I would have a novel. That’s why I’m going to break them up into a mini Style Trials “Bronze Skin Series.” This first one is going to touch on the types of self-tanners and my tried and true (not orange) favs of the bunch.

1.) GRADUAL Self-Tanner

If you are new to self-tanning and want to DIY, then go for a gradual tanner. This is one that has a diluted formula because it’s mixed with lotion, so it won’t turn you as dark with one application. If you don’t need to be immediately 6 shades darker the next day, then you can literally apply this  everyday in place of your normal lotion, and the color will gradually build up to a darker color. This also makes it a good route to go if you are worried about making novice mistakes and having streaks. Again, this type of lotion can take up to 6 applications to truly see the full results, but you have less risk of mess-ups.

Jergens Natural Glow Revitalizing Daily Moisturizer

2.) EXPRESS GRADUAL Self-Tanner

If you want to try a gradual tanner that doesn’t require as many applications to see the color, try this express version.  It’s what I currently use if I need some quick color during the day that isn’t as stinky as regular self-tanner, and only takes 1-3 applications to really see results. It’s more of an in-between to the normal gradual self-tanner and a regular self-tanner.

Jergens Natural Glow Express Body Moisturizer

Jergens Natural Glow Express Body Moisturizer

3.) Regular Self-Tanning LOTIONS

There’s a lot of good ones, and there’s a lot of orange ones. But L’Oreal Sublime is MY ABSOLUTE FAV self-tanner to use at home for a really natural color and easy application!

Use this if you’re confident in applying self-tanner and need to be tan the next day. This won’t immediately give you long-term color when applying, but it does have a built-in bronzer. Although the tint gives you a little bit of color immediately, you still need to wait at least 6 hours before washing it off to get the lasting color. A bonus to the tint is it makes it easier to apply and catch any “missed spots.”

The lotion actually has some pretty, sparkly light reflectors in it too, but my only downfall is it stinks like all self-tanners. The smell is actually not as bad as others, but I don’t typically wear it out of the house before it’s washed off. The texture is more of a gel rather than a lotion, which I like too. It makes my skin soft and is easy to spread and quick to dry.

Sublime Bronze Tinted Self Tanning Lotion

4.) SPRAY Self-Tanners

I have tried several DIY spray tanners, and I honestly have not liked them. I’ve tried ones where you have a hand-held spray gun and ones that come in aerosol cans. I’ve found that they come off splotchy, don’t turn you very dark, and it’s pretty impossible to do your back by yourself.

With that being said, I have tried spray tan booths or getting spray-tanned by a person and LOVE the results! This is the most expensive option of all of these choices, so I typically reserve them for special events. I’ve found they are great because you don’t have to worry about the hassle, and it typically comes out pretty even. Out of the two, the booths are my favorite because you don’t have to worry about tan lines (or standing naked in front of someone hosing you down!), and it only takes about 60 seconds in the booths. But the pros of having a person do it is that they can apply the tanner to make certain areas darker if you wish, and even contour to make you look like you have abs!

Many tanning salons offer spray tans, and sometimes have monthly unlimited packages. You’ll find different solutions at different salons (including organic formulas), but the one I use is VersaSpa at South Beach Tanning Company It doesn’t smell so bad either!

Spray Tan Booth Example

*QUICK TIP!* Many of these brands make separate self tanner for your face, but I typically just use the same tanner for my body and it works just fine. If you’re worried about it being too dark on your face, moisturize your face first to dilute the formula a bit.

Do you use or will you try self-tanners? What kind of self-tanner is most your style?

Mascara Tutorial: How to Fake False Eyelashes with your Real Lashes

Bold, beautiful eyelashes. Every girl wants them, and for good reason. Let’s just say if I HAD to pick only one item of makeup to put on for the rest of my life (scary!), my choice would be mascara. Unless you already have naturally dark, thick, long lashes, it makes the world of difference. See for yourself!

Because I wore stage makeup through my dance team days, I especially LOVE the look of fake eyelashes. I’ve also seen people with eyelash extensions, which are costly but look awesome for a few weeks. Still, they’re harder to maintain, can be really expensive, and you have to worry about them coming off or irritating your eyes. I personally only like to wear fake eyelashes for very special occasions. But as you can see in the picture above, I’ve found a way to achieve the look with my natural lashes!

For this more manageable everyday “fake eyelash” look, checkout the Style Trials video on how to fake the false eyelash look with your real lashes.  I cover my favorite mascara, and the tricks of applying it.

As I mention in the video, although I’ve tried a lot of different mascaras, Maybelline’s Falsies is the one that I’m always buying more of. I love that you can keep layering the techniques I showed as much as you want to, which builds up the volume and length of the natural lashes even more (thus amplifying the false eyelash look). With this “building” technique, I suggest letting the lashes dry or at least get tacky in between coats. But even if you need to do one quick coat and run out the door, it’s still more effective than other mascaras I’ve tried.

Maybelline Falsies Volum Express Mascara – $6.99

Volume Express The Falsies Mascara

So couple of questions for you.

1.) Have you tried this mascara before or do you have your own favorite you can suggest?

2.) If you could only put on one item of makeup, what would it be and why?

I love hearing from you. Leave me a comment on this post and let me know! 🙂
