Fall Favorites: Emi-Jay Hair Ties and Butter LONDON Nails

It’s October, and these are a few of my new Fall favorites. Emi-Jay Hair Ties and butter LONDON nail polish! Never heard of them? Here’s the deets…

Style Trials Emi Jay Hair Ties and Butter London Nail PolishEmi-Jay was founded by two teenage girls, Emily and Julianne, who also give back 20% of their profits to charities. Love that. You’ve probably seen these cool hair products everywhere by now (celebrities also LOVE them), but maybe didn’t quite catch what they were. These girls came up with new, fun hair ties and headbands that don’t pull hair and won’t crease it either. Why didn’t I think of that?!? GENIUS! They come in a variety of colors/prints, and can even be worn as bracelets! Each band is hand-dyed and unique, and you can even get accessories such as crystal beads or bows to add to your bands. Checkout a few examples:

I like the Emi Jay holiday ornament gift sets which would be a great gift for someone, or maybe Santa could add it to your stocking. 🙂 That would be a great starter for basic solids, and you get 8 for $19.99.

I especially think the layered look is really cool, especially if you have one that’s printed and a coordinating solid or glitter tie to go along.

My next favorite find is butter LONDON nail polish. I found this in a boutique store in Florida on Anna Maria Island, but they also sell it at places like Sephora. It’s a heavily pigmented, high-fashion nail lacquer that was created backstage at fashion week for top designers. It’s also formulated without Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Petrochemicals, Phthalates, GMOs, Triclosans, and is a “three-free” company. Meaning their products are free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP – basically not as bad for your nails as others. 🙂

I was really needing a good base coat, and although this one was pricey ($18), it seems to work well. It prevents my nails from yellowing, smooths and makes for a good nail polish base that last long. It also dries quickly, and the nude color is pretty that it could even be worn alone for really natural looking nails.

I was also on the prowl for a Fall color that could transition into Winter. Checkout all the nail lacquer colors…so many to choose from! Bronze nails are definitely in right now, so I landed on the Scuppered Nail Lacquer ($15).

I liked the pretty glitter that was more of a shimmery glitter (not chunky), and that it’s an opaque color. I hate when I buy glittery nail polish and it’s so transparent that I have to put on 5 coats to get an actual color! That was not the case with this, which took a normal 2 coats. I also like how it has faint pink and gold flecks, so it kind of changes color in different light angles. It’s great for holiday as well, and I’ve been wearing it straight for 3 weeks and still not sick of it.

Here’s a collaboration of my October Fall favorites.

How to get Better Beauty Sleep

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of ZzzQuil. All opinions are 100% mine.

Everyone’s heard the saying “I gotta get my beauty sleep,” but what exactly does that mean? Well, I did a little digging around and thought I’d share some interesting info.

Not only does getting the proper amount of sleep on a consistent basis make you feel better and is good for your health, but you’ll actually look better too. I’m not just talking about avoiding puffy eyes and dark circles, but your skin actually renews itself during this time. Not only that, but beauty sleep has also been linked to weight control.

Here’s Style Trials tips on how to get the most out of your beauty sleep!

  1. Get yourself on a routine. Try to set your “internal body clock” in a rhythm by going to bed and waking up at a regular time. This calls for weekends too!
  2. Wash your face and get on a skincare routine. This is the time the skin will rebalance and rebuild itself.
  3. Do not take caffeine or drink liquids too close to bedtime. Definite cause of sleeplessness/waking up in the middle of the night.
  4. Don’t workout too close to bedtime. This boosts your adrenaline, sometimes making it more difficult to fall asleep.
  5. Train yourself to be a “back sleeper.” Althought I really, really try and wish I were a back sleeper, I personally sleep on my stomach. This is SO bad as it increases wrinkles, especially on your chest, neck and face. If you absolutely can’t sleep on your back, then invest in a silk or satin pillowcase which will keep your face from twisting and wrinkling. The silky pillowcase will also make your “slept in” hair look fresher in the morning, especially if you have thin/oily hair.
  6. White sheets free from dyes are best, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  7. Try aromatherapy. Lavendar spray on a pillow case can relax and help you sleep.
  8. Invest in a good mattress. You’ll spend a good portion of your life sleeping on it!

No matter if you follow these steps, you may still have occassional nights of sleeplessness. I sometimes do myself, or have situations where I have a super early flight in the morning and have to go to bed much earlier than normal. That’s the worst, when you know you HAVE to fall asleep, but just can’t. Luckily, I found a solution!

I was sent a bottle of the cool new product ZzzQuil I’ve been hearing so much about. It’s from the makers of Vicks NyQuil, but is different because there’s no pain medication. ZzzQuil is literally just for the problem of occasional sleeplessness, and is non-habit forming. I tried out the liquid form because I hate taking pills (although they do offer it in pill form), and the taste wasn’t bad. Just kinda like cough syrup, and it instantly made my belly feel warm…which equals sleep for me! 🙂 I woke up feeling refreshed, so I’d definitely recommend this for adults and children 12+ years old who experience occassional sleeplessness.

If you’d like more info, checkout and “like” ZzzQuil on Facebook. If you try it out, let me know and tweet about your #ZzzQuilNight!

Poppy Nail Art for Valentine’s Day

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a BIG fan of celebrating the holidays. Any excuse to be festive is enough for me! With that, I’m dedicating this nail art tutorial to upcoming Valentine’s Day. : -)

Style Trials Vday Nail Art Tutorial

Checkout my video for the tutorial on how to achieve this two-tone, romantic Valentine’s nail art. I love the poppy colors!

Valentine’s Nail Art

Products Used:

  • Zoya Nail Polish, color Kara
  • Zoya Nail Polish, color Jewell
  • White Nail Art Pen
  • Regular Tape

Like I showed in the video, you could even stop at just the two-tone nail art shading part, which would give you a poppy Spring look instead. But I think adding the white details and little heart help make it more romantic for something specific like Valentine’s.

You can do this type of look with any colors, so get creative! Don’t have the colors you want or nail art pens?  Checkout the options at Ulta, and use this Ulta 20% off ANY product coupon. It even works on sale and clearance items, and is good till 2/16/13!

Here’s one last closeup.

Outfit of the Day 2: Day to Night

This OOTD is kind of a 2-in-1 and has already received some great response on Style Trial’s Youtube channel! It’s a play on the “leather” trend (okay, I hate the word pleather) that’s so popular right now. Wearing the look of leather is tricky enough when incorporating it into a work appropriate outfit, but I don’t stop there. I also show how to take this sassy look from work casual to nighttime chic in a snap! I personally know it can be a challenge when working on a Friday, then having to look cute for going out directly after. This is a good example of how you can restyle an outfit to transition from day to night.

ST Outfit of the Day 2: Day to Night

  • Pleather pleated skirt – Forever 21
  • “Bonjour” Tank Top – H&M
  • Gray knit sweater – Express
  • Tory Burch Black Reva Ballet Flats with Gold Buckle
  • Stella & Dot Gold Stacking Bracelets
  • Suede black booties – Payless
  • Red Lipstick Tutorial
  • Necklace – White House Black Market
  • Hairstyle – Bun Tutorial

The key is pre-planning before you leave so you can effectively layer clothes (i.e. Bonjour tank top under work sweater), plus pack anything for the transition before you leave the house. As the video shows, I’d suggest these things so you can pack light and maybe even fit everything in your purse:

  1. Punchy lip color or eyeshadow (or any bolder makeup you want to apply after work
  2. Statement jewelry
  3. Shoes to dress it up or give the outfit a different feel
  4. *OPTIONAL* If the work purse just doesn’t fit with the night look, grab a small clutch too

Here’s a few full length shots:

Work Casual to begin with…

…easily mixed up for a night on the town!

Have you embraced the “look of leather,” or pleather (ek) look? What is your #1 must pack beauty or fashion item for transitioning a look from day to night?

Outfit of the Day 1 – Girly meets Motorcycle Boots

Hi everyone! I’m starting a new series on Style Trials called “Outfit of the Day,” a.k.a. OOTD. Why? Because having a cool outfit is greatly due to how you style it…not necessarily the clothes themselves. It’s all about putting an entire look together. My goal is to give you ideas where you can take what I share and opt for the same stuff, or find something similar in your own closet and go for it! You’ll find I get creative with new, old, and some really old stuff (I tend to keep everything!), so I hope you enjoy this series!

To kick things off, I’m starting with a fun little Fall outfit where everything is under $50! That’s right, from top to bottom, including shoes (I scored them on clearance)! Check it out….

ST Outfit of the Day: 1

I could have easily paired this dress with simple ballet flats, but I thought “nah, let’s kick it up a notch.” The trick is mixing nice-girl stuff with bad-chick stuff that you wouldn’t necessarily think go together. Plus, short combat and motorcycle boots are really hot right now, and you can wear them with so much more than just this outfit. They’d be a great investment for Fall/Winter! Here’s a few options if you’re looking:

With this OOTD, I especially love how the dress has a vintage feel to it. I tend to gravitate towards retro inspired clothes. The style and floral print reminds me of something from the 60’s, and I paired it with a silver bird double-ring (both from Forever 21).

For my hair, I did a simple part down the middle (a la “Marsha Brady”), and kept the makeup simple, girly pink, and toned down. Although I did want to play up the 60’s vibe by winging my eyeliner out with a liquid liner.

I hope this OOTD gives some inspiration!

Let me know if you like this look and “Outfit of the Day” series. I’ll make sure to do more!
