OOTD 5: Transitioning from Winter to Spring

Florida weather has been really fickle throughout this time (like everywhere else except without snow – I promise I’m not complaining!), but lately it’s been b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. In this OOTD, I wanted to inspire with looks that can help transition you from Winter to Spring. I was heading out and about to run errands with my hubby and pooch (long-haired chihuahua named Milo) on this beautiful weekend day.

Style Trials OOTD winter to spring 2Although sunny and warm, there was a bit of a wind chill in the air, so I pulled together this outfit with short, flat boots, a burgundy felt hat, and a holy knit sweater. The holy sweater gives a lighter look for Spring because of the holes (when compared to a solid knits), and it adds an interest of texture. The open knit also pulls together the suede on my shoes and the felt in the hat, which are warmer materials. The floral lightweight shorts of course give this a cooler, relaxed look that all together is a great transition into Spring.

Style Trials OOTD winter to springI added the purse for a fun pop of color. However, if I had a fringe purse, I think that would have worked as well.

We came across an abandoned soccer field, and stopped to let Milo run around and play in the grass.

I am in love with this hat, and looked long and hard for one that was perfect. I found this online at Tobi. I knew I wanted a burgundy hat, and also one that wasn’t too floppy. I’m also obsessed with my Alex and Ani bracelets, and like to stack them. Style Trials Alex and Ani stacked bracelets love jewels and sister Style Trials OOTD winter to spring 3 I paired the outfit with simple “adult” pigtails, which were really easy to do. I simply did a loose braid on either side, then pulled out strands so it had a messier, boho-chic vibe.

How to do a High Top Knot Bun like Nicole Richie

Bun hairstyles are still going strong. And what’s not to love? They can save you from rainy days, bad beach hair, or simply when you just don’t feel like styling washing your hair. From my tutorial on how to do a messy bun or a sleek doughnut  bun, you saw that there’s different types of buns that range from glam to boho chic. This tutorial is focusing on the high, top knot bun that Nicole Richie is famous for. Plus, it’s SUPER easy and takes less than 2 minutes to do!

You’ll see a top knot is supposed to be a tighter styled bun, taller, and right on top of your head. Doesn’t Nicole Richie’s top knot look adorable? Kinda makes me want bangs.

Because it’s a simple hairstyle, it really lets smokey eyes, a bright lip, or a killer outfit take the stage. For me, I also found that this is the easiest and quickest bun if you have fine or thin hair. It actually looks best because with a top knot, you want the base of the bun to be as small as possible, which pushes up height on the bun. Checkout my 2 minute tutorial below:

You don’t technically HAVE to have bobby pins, so if you need a quick fix and only have a hair-tie, this would still work.

Win a Set of Midi Rings!

“Midi rings. What the heck is that?” Followed by deer-in-the-headlights look. That’s the response I got from several salespeople on my quest for midi rings. It’s pretty simple actually. It’s basically a knuckle ring, or one that you wear on the upper part of your finger. Keeping reading to learn more, and for a chance to win your own set!

Style Trials Midi Rings Stacked

Midi rings have been popping up everywhere, and I especially love when they are stacked with a regular ring on the same finger. I also really love just a basic thin, metal band, although there’s a lot with cool designs such as a cross or chevron.

I was on the hunt for midi rings, and after going into several boutiques and finding they were $10+ a pop, or the salesperson had no idea what a midi ring was, I decided to look online. I found a TON of inexpensive options at Forever 21, which is awesome because I didn’t want to spend a ton on this trend, and wanted to stack a LOT of rings for either a boho chic or cool edgy look. I liked how they had cage rings and double banded midi rings to mix up the look. If you want something a little more high quality, Baublebar also has some GREAT midi ring options.

*ST Quick Tip* If you have a really small ring like a pinky ring or toe ring, you may be able to repurpose it as a midi ring on your finger.

How to do a Ponytail with a Twist!

This cool hairstyle tutorial is inspired by the Fendi runway show during New York Fashion week earlier this year. I LOVED the model’s twisted ponytail hairstyle! It would work on long or medium length hair (short hair, you can definitely do a variation of this or add in clip-in extensions), straight or curly. You can also take these tips and create new hairstyle variations.

I spotted the ‘do while reading my Glamour magazine and thought, “What a creative way to make a ponytail more interesting and modern!” Something I definitely wanted to attempt myself, and it looks awesome! In my video, I go through step-by-step instructions on how to achieve a similar ponytail twisted hairstyle. My version is easy for anyone to do on their own hair, so give it a try! I also mention little tips and tricks throughout (especially helpful if you have layers), so make sure to watch the whole thing and let me know what you think!

I love braids and twisting hair for Fall, so it’s great for the season (or really anytime of the year). I also love how this hairstyle works with a range of styles, from boho to sleek and modern. For extra style flair, try incorporating some fun hair accessories like this!

How to do a Messy Bun OR Polished Bun Hairstyle

It’s no secret that the bun hairstyle has made a major come back in Hollywood. No longer just a ballerina staple, lots of modern variations have cropped up! I wear these variations a lot, and wanted to show you how to get a perfect bun.

There’s the pretty, polished bun like Kim Kardashian always wears….

A really great hairstyle to glam up an outfit, especially when you add long, dangly earrings. Extra style points for wearing this super high on your head for a more modern look (and less ballerina).

Kate Bosworth also wears it well, and you can see it looks great with any hair color.

There’s the messy, I just threw-this-up-on-top-of-my-head (but not really) kinda cool, unfinished bun like Vanessa Hudgens’.

You can really wear this with anything. If you wear it up high, it still looks casually chic. You can also pull off a kind of boho, effortless look with this hairstyle. It looks even better if you curl your hair first to add texture and pull face-framing pieces out.

And finally, one of my fav bun looks of the season (besides wearing is smack on top of your head) is wearing this messy or polished bun on the side. Looks like a chignon, but easier to do.

So you want to try it out, right? Here’s my tutorial on how to create BOTH of these looks!

HOW TO DO A MESSY BUN AND SLEEK KIM KARDASHIAN BUN

As I mention in the video, I have thin hair so I focus on making my bun fuller. However, if you have thick hair and want to try something like the Perfect Bun Maker, just take any excess hair and wrap it around the base after you’ve completed the bun. It will look extra cool. 🙂

This is seriously one of my favorite inventions, and probably the best $4.99 I’ve spent. It’s saved me from lot’s of “don’t-feel-like-washing-my-hair” days!

How to do an Easy Fishtail Braid

I’ve had requests from people asking how to do a fishtail braid, which is actually a lot easier than it looks. So I thought I would share this with everyone to let you know it’s really not as scary as it looks. Anyone can do it, I promise! Ok, I take that back…I guess you wouldn’t be able to do this braid if your hair was two inches long, but you get what I mean!

A fishtail braid is a bit of a twist on the more traditional braid, and is something that’s definitely in style right now. It’s called “fish tail” because it mimics the look of just that…a fishes backbone/tail. It gives you an effortless, easy breezy vibe, boho chic look, or can even be paired with cocktail attire as a way to do a pulled back ‘do. The beauty of it is that it’s playfully messy, so it’s okay if it’s not perfect. In fact, it actually looks better if it’s not. Here’s a Celebrity inspiration picture.

Dianna Agron from Glee rocks a pretty fishtail braid.

Here’s a close up of this braid….

Ok, not going to lie — the method of this braid is A LOT easier than it looks, but it also takes a bit of practice to get the handling of the hair down. I’m right handed, so for me it’s easiest to braid over my right shoulder. I mention a lot of tips and tricks in my video as I’m braiding, so if you have time you should watch the whole thing to answer any questions you may have. If you need a quicker “how-to,” then feel free to fast-forward a bit…won’t hurt my feelings! 🙂

EASY FISHTAIL BRAID TUTORIAL

I also took slightly bigger chunks of hair when braiding for time sake (the bigger the chunks, the faster the braid), but you do see more of a “fishtail effect” if you take about half the size of the hair chunks to braid (also taking double the amount of time).

Doing a solo braid to one side is a quick way to get a fun hairstyle, and now that you’ve learned the method from my video feel free to get even more creative with fishtail braids! Like this!

Kim Kardashian uses fishtail braids to update pig tails.

I would love to see your variation of a fishtail braid. Send me a pic or tweet it to me @mystyletrials!
