Review and Freebie: Coastal.com and Derek Cardigan Eyeglasses!

This post brought to you by Coastal.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

Eyeglasses used to be the bane of fashion, but now it’s become a trendy accessory. So much so that you see celebrities sporting glasses even if they don’t need them, or people buying multiple pairs to wear different styles with different outfits. If you’ve been following me for awhile, then you read about my quest for the perfect pair of nerdy chic, hipster eyeglasses. Then I recently got LASIK, and didn’t necessarily need those glasses anymore. I was sad because I still thought they were cute and wanted to wear them on occasion, but adding non-prescription lenses to those Raybans would be more than $100….crazy! That’s why I was so excited to have this opportunity to pick a different pair of glasses for free from Coastal.com. I have to tell you about this awesome experience, and how YOU too can get a free pair of Designer Eyeglasses!

Listen up people! 🙂

I’ve never tried purchasing eyeglass or sunglasses online before (it kind of intimidated me), but this was a really easy buying experience. Coastal.com has become the largest online retailer of eyeglasses and contact lenses in North America, and I could definitely see why! They have all of the big designer brands/products offered in stores, but for half the price. They also deliver directly to your home, and offer prescription glasses, non-prescription glasses, and even sunglasses. I specifically LOVE their line of Derek Cardigan Eyeglasses for men and women, which are classically vintage inspired, yet trendy. They have a ton of different styles and color options, like this!

Since I already had a pair of eyeglasses with a square frame, I wanted something completely different. I was thinking maybe a color like fuschia, or just a different shape. I was really gravitating towards the cateye glasses, and they had a few different Derek Cardigan cateye options. I uploaded a photo of myself and used their virtual tool online to “try on” a few pairs.

I decided this cateye style 7019 in Dark Timber was the winner. Just cateye enough, but not too over-the-top so I could still wear them to work.

All lenses come with anti-scratch and anti-glare. I ended up having a quick question since I was ordering non-prescription glasses, and I simply used their live chat. Super easy!

My glasses arrived in the mail about 2 weeks later. They came in a nice case with a cleaner and eyeglass tool kit.

I love how Derek Cardigan puts different math symbols on his frames. This style has a colon and a semi-colon…I’m so easily amused! Now prepare for a selfie photo shoot.

I Can See! Hunter Vision 3D LASIK Eye Surgery Review

I’d been wearing glasses/contacts for 18 years now, and was basically blind without them. I’m talking a prescription of -7 and thick, embarrassing glasses for a ten-year old. I temporarily remedied my “blindness” by turning to contacts and finally finding the CUTEST pair of hipster nerdy eyeglasses around. However, I was still constantly falling asleep in my contacts (bad!), and as Hubby liked to joke, would be handicapped if a zombie apocalypse occurred (yep, we’re fans of the TV show The Walking Dead). So I decided to take action, and finally get LASIK. Oh, and there’s a video! Uh huh, reeeeaddd onnn.

I went with Hunter Vision out of the RDV in Orlando, Florida for several reasons. I knew people who had gone to Dr. Hunter and had a great experience. I also liked the staff, and got a great deal by locking in a last minute appointment! But aside from that, their equipment is top-of-the line and Dr. Hunter is very knowledgeable and personable.

I particularly liked how they offer LASIK 3D, which of course is a marketing thing, but really did mean 2 things. They use fancy expensive  cameras to take 3D images of the eye. This helps to see if you are in fact a good candidate for LASIK, or if you would have major issues down the road. Because of this diagnostic tool, they actually turn down a lot more people as candidates than most other LASIK places. They want to be sure you’re a perfect candidate and will get great results!

Side view of my eyeball.

The other thing with 3D LASIK is the type of laser they use. It’s built to retain the natural curvature of your eye as much as possible, which especially helps someone like me with a really bad prescription. This also helps reduce night “light halos,” which is a common side effect people experience for a few months after.

LASIK COST

One of the questions I get asked the most is, “how much does LASIK cost?” Well, I have to tell you that it really depends! I looked at a few clinics, and they all had different options. Mainly, the difference in cost was associated with whether you wanted an “eye warranty” and for how long. They also price per eye, and averages range between $1,500 – $3,000 per eye.

I also had to buy prescribed drops, which is standard with any LASIK surgery. This helps with inflammation, healing, and dry eyes – Restasis eyedrops, Refresh Plus eyedrops, and to some other prescription drops be exact. Even with insurance, these drops still added up to over $200 (I think it was over $600 without), so something you should account for when anticipating costs.

DAY OF PROCEDURE

I have to say, I got really nervous the day of surgery when I realized they were actually going to be cutting my eyeball now (gulp)! In fact, the night before I almost cancelled, but instead decided to eat myself into an Italian food coma so the day would come quicker.

You aren’t allowed to wear any makeup on surgery day either, as well as any eye makeup for the next week. If you’ve read my review on my favorite mascara, you’ll know that was a tough one to swallow!

The day of, I went into the office and they gave me numbing eye drops and half a Valium to calm any nerves.

Dr. Hunter also told me a few key things to expect during surgery. Boy am I glad he did, otherwise I think I would have freaked out during certain parts! Here’s what he told me and exactly what happened.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING SURGERY

  • They work on one eye at a time, and it literally takes only a few minutes to complete. You’re done with the entire surgery in about 20 minutes.
  • They use this thing to keep your top and bottom eyelids open while they’re working on that eye. It felt weird, but not nearly as weird as I expected.
  • They use a tool to hold your eyeball in place. He told me I would feel pressure on that eyeball, and then temporarily lose vision in that eye. That’s exactly what happened, which was kind of strange since you know your eye is wide open. It honestly just felt like it was closed the whole time, so no biggie there.
  • The next step is the laser. He rolled me over to another machine (I stayed reclined in the same chair), and the laser part took about 10-15 seconds. Super quick! All you do during this part is look at a green light, and you don’t feel anything. The only thing you will notice is a smell like a firework. Dr. Hunter forewarned me about this, and told me it’s something that happens when the laser actually hits the air…it’s NOT your eyeball burning.

Check it out for yourself. My hubby was present during the surgery, and took a video of my LASIK procedure!

SUCCESS! I was soooo relieved and HAPPY when I was done. Can you tell?

AFTER LASIK

Immediately after this picture was taken, I could already see better than before. My eyes were still numb from the numbing drops, but things were definitely less blurry! I also got some “super cool” shades to wear for the day. 🙂

I was tasked with putting in some prescription drops for the next week, along with those awesome Refresh Plus Eyedrops for the rest of surgery day every 15 minutes. Those things are awesome, and I still use them! Even if you don’t have LASIK, I recommend these drops as it dramatically helps with dry eyes and redness on a daily basis.

I’m not going to say that everything from there was rosy, because it definitely got worse when the numbing drops wore off. It never really hurt, just more watery eye irritation and my vision got blurry again. The best way to describe it is if you’ve ever scratched your eye before, or worn a contact lens that was ripped or inside out. That kind of irritation lasted for about an hour, but I found the Refresh Plus Eyedrops really helped the irritation. Then there was a moment when I guess the “eye flap” seals itself (about an hour or so after surgery), and you immediately feel relief! From there, things just continue to get better throughout the day, and your vision improves. By the end of the night, my vision was amazingly clear but still a little blurry at a distance.

They give you plastic eye barriers to tape over your eyes when you sleep for the next few days. You aren’t supposed to rub/touch your eyes, and this helps prevent that while sleeping. The next morning, I woke up and could see the alarm clock! So weird! My vision (thank God) was perfect.

There was a post-op appt. the next day, and everything looked good. I actually was better than 20/20, I was 20/15! I setup a 3 month, 6 month, and year followup appointment.

SIDE EFFECTS

There are typically 2 common side effects from LASIK. The first is halos around lights, which people particularly experience while driving at night. I had this for literally 2 days after surgery, and it was not even bad then. I don’t experience light halos at all now (maybe the 3D laser really did help), but of course everyone is different.

The second is dry eyes. After surgery, you have to put the Restasis prescription drops in twice a day to help with chronic dryness. Your eyes are healing over the next 6 months, so you will most likely have dry eyes. Along with Restasis, I’m continuing my Refresh Plus Eyedrops. I do experience dry eyes still, and it’s been about 2 months since my surgery. However, Dr. Hunter said that it will get better over the next few months, and I have felt an improvement.

OVERALL

Overall, this is probably the best money I’ve spent! I keep trying to take my contacts out at night, and then realize I’m not wearing them. No more having to run to the store when I run out or forget to pack contact solution, and no worrying about losing a contact lens. If you have anymore questions about my LASIK eye surgery, definitely let me know. Just leave me a comment below or email me and I’ll respond. 🙂

I just want to say a quick “THANK YOU” to Dr. Hunter and his team at Hunter Vision. They really were awesome to work with, and did an amazing job!

Now the question is, should I get non-prescription lenses put back into my Rayban eyeglasses??? I still love them and definitely want the option to wear as an accessory!

Fantasy Makeup Halloween Tutorial

A few weeks back, I asked you to vote on which Halloween makeup look you wanted to see most. We had a clear winner!

Checkout my tutorial below. This would be the perfect makeup look for any girly, glam, or fantasy type of costume. I’m thinking fairies, mermaids, butterflies, princesses, even 80’s or disco since I used a blue/pink combo.

Outfit of the Day 1 – Girly meets Motorcycle Boots

Hi everyone! I’m starting a new series on Style Trials called “Outfit of the Day,” a.k.a. OOTD. Why? Because having a cool outfit is greatly due to how you style it…not necessarily the clothes themselves. It’s all about putting an entire look together. My goal is to give you ideas where you can take what I share and opt for the same stuff, or find something similar in your own closet and go for it! You’ll find I get creative with new, old, and some really old stuff (I tend to keep everything!), so I hope you enjoy this series!

To kick things off, I’m starting with a fun little Fall outfit where everything is under $50! That’s right, from top to bottom, including shoes (I scored them on clearance)! Check it out….

ST Outfit of the Day: 1

I could have easily paired this dress with simple ballet flats, but I thought “nah, let’s kick it up a notch.” The trick is mixing nice-girl stuff with bad-chick stuff that you wouldn’t necessarily think go together. Plus, short combat and motorcycle boots are really hot right now, and you can wear them with so much more than just this outfit. They’d be a great investment for Fall/Winter! Here’s a few options if you’re looking:

With this OOTD, I especially love how the dress has a vintage feel to it. I tend to gravitate towards retro inspired clothes. The style and floral print reminds me of something from the 60’s, and I paired it with a silver bird double-ring (both from Forever 21).

For my hair, I did a simple part down the middle (a la “Marsha Brady”), and kept the makeup simple, girly pink, and toned down. Although I did want to play up the 60’s vibe by winging my eyeliner out with a liquid liner.

I hope this OOTD gives some inspiration!

Let me know if you like this look and “Outfit of the Day” series. I’ll make sure to do more!

What to Wear to a Concert #iHeartRadio

In case you didn’t see my excitement on Twitter and Facebook, I have some BIG news! I won a trip to the #iHeartRadio Music Festival, in LAS VEGAS!!! OMG, right?

It happened last month  when I was listening to Johnny’s House on the radio (the morning show) on XL 106.7. It was a nationwide contest, and I texted the keyword to be randomly selected as the winner!

The text that won me a trip to the #iheartradio Music Festival in Las Vegas! Everyone who texted in received this response that I won!

It was like winning the lottery! The Hubby and I love Vegas to begin with, and this was going to be such a huge, iconic concert already sold out to the public. I couldn’t believe it! You can actually hear my voice in this promo sound clip created by #iheartradio! I’m in there twice. Did you hear it? Kinda a fun game. On top of that, Johnny’s House interviewed me on the radio about winning, which was an awesome experience!

The concert was last weekend (Sept. 21st and 22nd), and was held at the MGM Grand hotel. My prize included a trip for two (yay, Hubby got to go) with airfare, transportation to the hotel, 2 nights at the MGM Grand, and 2 tickets to the festival for each night.

When we got to Vegas, there was a person holding a sign for the winners to get to their bus. The bus took us to our hotel VIP style! 🙂

Is it obvious that’s normally not “how I roll”? I started a frenzy of photos with other winners after this. Poor guy holding the sign!

They specially wrapped the bus for us! So cool!

The MGM Grand is an awesome hotel on the Vegas strip, and it was exceptionally great because I could just get ready, then head downstairs and not worry about taxis. Here’s a pic of the room…

After a 5 hour 6 am flight, I celebrated by doing a running belly flop onto the giant bed in our room. It had to be done.

So now I was tasked with what the heck to wear to this concert! I learned that we had actual seats, so to me that translated into being able to wear heels because I wouldn’t have to stand the whole time. Otherwise, I would have planned my entire outfit around wearing flat shoes.  That’s definitely something for you to consider when going to a concert, because the worst thing is being uncomfortable and not being able to enjoy the show!

First night my inspiration was “Glam meet Rock.”

NIGHT 1: Glam Meets Rock

I tried to take a creative shot with the city in the background!

Glam meets Rock!

To achieve this look, simply mix really delicate, feminine motifs (i.e. lace, ribbons, sheer, sparkle, shine) with harsher, masculine motifs (i.e. boots, studs, spikes, denim).

My second look was more girly. I was going for “Jenny from Forrest Gump in the 70’s” in a modern way. LOL, I know. In this case I found the shirt as initial inspiration, which led me to that vision.

Night 2: Modern 70’s Disco Queen

Modern 70’s Disco Look

I love how the sequins on this top are really small and not chunky.

To do this, I found my one key piece that screamed modern 70’s, the sequined gold top, then worked around that. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, but I got a lot of compliments and felt pretty in this outfit. Also, my brown smokey eye went perfect with both looks!

And of course I couldn’t leave you without some awesome pics of the concert! My highlights of the concert were the No Doubt/Pink duet of “Just a Girl,” Pink flying over the crowd while flipping and singing, Greenday freaking out and smashing their guitars, the surprise visit from Prince, Taylor Swift being adorable with her banjo, Aerosmith singing “Cryin’,” and surprise presenters Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Ryan Seacrest. And that’s just some of the highlights! Honestly, it just kept getting better and better as there were a TON of surprises.

The iheartradio 2012 Lineup!

ALL of Vegas was decked out in iHeartRadio promotions, especially the MGM Grand!

Getting ready to head into the concert the first night!

Counting down to the start of the show!

Gwen Stefani and Pink’s duet to “Just a Girl.”

Everyone got glow bracelets. They automatically lit up to the music beats!

Enrique Iglesias performance at the iHeartRadio music festival.

The arena looked AWESOME for DeadMau5!

Taylor Swift being adorbs.

Pink literally flew over the audience and did flips. You’ve gotta see this!

Bon Jovi “It’s My Life” performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.

Before Billie Joe Armstrong’s rant at the iHeartRadio music festival.

Shortly after this pic, we snuck into the lower level! Shhh! 🙂

You can see more and professional iHeartRadio Music Festival 2012 pictures here. It was definitely the trip of a lifetime, and I’m so thankful I got that opportunity!

Sad you missed it? Don’t worry! You can catch the premier of the concert airing on TV (CW network) Monday, October 1st from  8:00 pm – 10:00 pm.

So I’ll leave you with this….

What do you like to wear to concerts? Which of my looks do you like the best?

Cruise and Beach Vacation Essentials – Stock Up On End of Summer Sales!

Cruises, beaches, tropical resorts! You’re probably wondering why I’m doing this post going into Fall, huh? In my attempt to hang onto the last bits of Summer, I actually have good reasoning beyond that. Here’s why!

  1. Summer is ending so now is the time to find great stuff on clearance and stock up for next year.
  2. I live in Florida so it’s still 90+ degree beach weather!
  3. Most importantly, my husband Gary and I are celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary NEXT WEEK (yayyy!) on an 8-day Carnival cruise! SOO EXCITED!!! 🙂 While cruises are definitely top of my mind right now, I actually know a lot of other people who are going/just went on a cruise too. Makes sense because you can find great deals on cruises in the off-season.

Whatever the case, my universal problem with traveling has always been packing because, let’s face it, I pack way too much….I like options! So I thought long and hard to narrow the essential must-have pieces for a cruise or really any other beachy, tropical getaway. You can use this as a packing guide, or inspiration for items to hunt during these end-of-season sales.

CRUISE WEAR

Obviously it doesn’t have to be these exact pieces, but this is a general idea of basics to include. A few tank tops and shorts, a casual sundress, a swimsuit coverup, a nicer outfit you can dress up or down (like the romper), comfy flip flops, and dressier shoes that still look casual (platform wedges).

You’ll want to accessorize with a bag that is fairly neutral so you can wear it with everything, cool sunglasses, and a straw beach hat. Of course you’ll need a few bikini options, and I’d suggest mix-and-match bikinis so you can get more looks out of less pieces. Victoria’s Secret is actually having an end-of season sale right now on their swimwear, so I’d suggest checking it out! I just stocked up.

WHAT’S IN MY CRUISE BEAUTY BAG

If you’re like me and don’t want to be pale in a bikini, you should checkout the Style Trials Bronze Skin Series for the BEST Self tanners.

I just want to leave you with one last thing. Have a great Labor Day weekend, and think of me while I’M ON A BOAT!

Yeeeep, I just went there. 🙂

What are your  top fashion and beauty items when packing for a vacation getaway? Leave me a comment and let me know!

How to get a Flawless Face

I recently got a request to do a flawless face tutorial, and I LOVE requests! There are many things that can go into a flawless face, starting with good skincare, but I wanted to focus this tutorial on an everyday makeup routine that’s a perfect base for ANY makeup look. I cover tips and techniques for achieving this look and making it your own, touching on a few beauty tricks. It really depends on how much coverage you’re going for, but for my preference I like a minimal look for everyday, which I showcase in the video. I do mention ways to get heavier coverage though (which I love to do for nighttime or blotchy skin problems), so make sure to watch the entire thing!

I forgot to mention in the video that before you start any flawless face look, you start with a clean, moisturized face. I also like to add face primer to smooth out skin and have makeup last longer.
