How to do a High Top Knot Bun like Nicole Richie

Bun hairstyles are still going strong. And what’s not to love? They can save you from rainy days, bad beach hair, or simply when you just don’t feel like styling washing your hair. From my tutorial on how to do a messy bun or a sleek doughnut  bun, you saw that there’s different types of buns that range from glam to boho chic. This tutorial is focusing on the high, top knot bun that Nicole Richie is famous for. Plus, it’s SUPER easy and takes less than 2 minutes to do!

You’ll see a top knot is supposed to be a tighter styled bun, taller, and right on top of your head. Doesn’t Nicole Richie’s top knot look adorable? Kinda makes me want bangs.

Because it’s a simple hairstyle, it really lets smokey eyes, a bright lip, or a killer outfit take the stage. For me, I also found that this is the easiest and quickest bun if you have fine or thin hair. It actually looks best because with a top knot, you want the base of the bun to be as small as possible, which pushes up height on the bun. Checkout my 2 minute tutorial below:

You don’t technically HAVE to have bobby pins, so if you need a quick fix and only have a hair-tie, this would still work.

Outfit of the Day 2: Day to Night

This OOTD is kind of a 2-in-1 and has already received some great response on Style Trial’s Youtube channel! It’s a play on the “leather” trend (okay, I hate the word pleather) that’s so popular right now. Wearing the look of leather is tricky enough when incorporating it into a work appropriate outfit, but I don’t stop there. I also show how to take this sassy look from work casual to nighttime chic in a snap! I personally know it can be a challenge when working on a Friday, then having to look cute for going out directly after. This is a good example of how you can restyle an outfit to transition from day to night.

ST Outfit of the Day 2: Day to Night

  • Pleather pleated skirt – Forever 21
  • “Bonjour” Tank Top – H&M
  • Gray knit sweater – Express
  • Tory Burch Black Reva Ballet Flats with Gold Buckle
  • Stella & Dot Gold Stacking Bracelets
  • Suede black booties – Payless
  • Red Lipstick Tutorial
  • Necklace – White House Black Market
  • Hairstyle – Bun Tutorial

The key is pre-planning before you leave so you can effectively layer clothes (i.e. Bonjour tank top under work sweater), plus pack anything for the transition before you leave the house. As the video shows, I’d suggest these things so you can pack light and maybe even fit everything in your purse:

  1. Punchy lip color or eyeshadow (or any bolder makeup you want to apply after work
  2. Statement jewelry
  3. Shoes to dress it up or give the outfit a different feel
  4. *OPTIONAL* If the work purse just doesn’t fit with the night look, grab a small clutch too

Here’s a few full length shots:

Have you embraced the “look of leather,” or pleather (ek) look? What is your #1 must pack beauty or fashion item for transitioning a look from day to night?

How to do a Messy Bun OR Polished Bun Hairstyle

It’s no secret that the bun hairstyle has made a major come back in Hollywood. No longer just a ballerina staple, lots of modern variations have cropped up! I wear these variations a lot, and wanted to show you how to get a perfect bun.

There’s the pretty, polished bun like Kim Kardashian always wears….

A really great hairstyle to glam up an outfit, especially when you add long, dangly earrings. Extra style points for wearing this super high on your head for a more modern look (and less ballerina).

Kate Bosworth also wears it well, and you can see it looks great with any hair color.

There’s the messy, I just threw-this-up-on-top-of-my-head (but not really) kinda cool, unfinished bun like Vanessa Hudgens’.

You can really wear this with anything. If you wear it up high, it still looks casually chic. You can also pull off a kind of boho, effortless look with this hairstyle. It looks even better if you curl your hair first to add texture and pull face-framing pieces out.

And finally, one of my fav bun looks of the season (besides wearing is smack on top of your head) is wearing this messy or polished bun on the side. Looks like a chignon, but easier to do.

So you want to try it out, right? Here’s my tutorial on how to create BOTH of these looks!

HOW TO DO A MESSY BUN AND SLEEK KIM KARDASHIAN BUN

As I mention in the video, I have thin hair so I focus on making my bun fuller. However, if you have thick hair and want to try something like the Perfect Bun Maker, just take any excess hair and wrap it around the base after you’ve completed the bun. It will look extra cool. 🙂

This is seriously one of my favorite inventions, and probably the best $4.99 I’ve spent. It’s saved me from lot’s of “don’t-feel-like-washing-my-hair” days!
