Fall Favorites: Emi-Jay Hair Ties and Butter LONDON Nails

It’s October, and these are a few of my new Fall favorites. Emi-Jay Hair Ties and butter LONDON nail polish! Never heard of them? Here’s the deets…

Style Trials Emi Jay Hair Ties and Butter London Nail PolishEmi-Jay was founded by two teenage girls, Emily and Julianne, who also give back 20% of their profits to charities. Love that. You’ve probably seen these cool hair products everywhere by now (celebrities also LOVE them), but maybe didn’t quite catch what they were. These girls came up with new, fun hair ties and headbands that don’t pull hair and won’t crease it either. Why didn’t I think of that?!? GENIUS! They come in a variety of colors/prints, and can even be worn as bracelets! Each band is hand-dyed and unique, and you can even get accessories such as crystal beads or bows to add to your bands. Checkout a few examples:

I like the Emi Jay holiday ornament gift sets which would be a great gift for someone, or maybe Santa could add it to your stocking. 🙂 That would be a great starter for basic solids, and you get 8 for $19.99.

I especially think the layered look is really cool, especially if you have one that’s printed and a coordinating solid or glitter tie to go along.

My next favorite find is butter LONDON nail polish. I found this in a boutique store in Florida on Anna Maria Island, but they also sell it at places like Sephora. It’s a heavily pigmented, high-fashion nail lacquer that was created backstage at fashion week for top designers. It’s also formulated without Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Petrochemicals, Phthalates, GMOs, Triclosans, and is a “three-free” company. Meaning their products are free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP – basically not as bad for your nails as others. 🙂

I was really needing a good base coat, and although this one was pricey ($18), it seems to work well. It prevents my nails from yellowing, smooths and makes for a good nail polish base that last long. It also dries quickly, and the nude color is pretty that it could even be worn alone for really natural looking nails.

I was also on the prowl for a Fall color that could transition into Winter. Checkout all the nail lacquer colors…so many to choose from! Bronze nails are definitely in right now, so I landed on the Scuppered Nail Lacquer ($15).

I liked the pretty glitter that was more of a shimmery glitter (not chunky), and that it’s an opaque color. I hate when I buy glittery nail polish and it’s so transparent that I have to put on 5 coats to get an actual color! That was not the case with this, which took a normal 2 coats. I also like how it has faint pink and gold flecks, so it kind of changes color in different light angles. It’s great for holiday as well, and I’ve been wearing it straight for 3 weeks and still not sick of it.

Here’s a collaboration of my October Fall favorites.

Last step! Use a q-tip soaked in nail polish remover to clean up your edges, then apply a shiny top coat.

Also, if you’re looking for outfit inspiration for the 4th, make sure to checkout this vintage American look I put together last year. I recommend picking one patriotic thing, and working neutrals around that so as not to go overboard. 🙂

Cotton Candy Bunny Tails

A friend of mine made the cutest Easter treats for a party, and I couldn’t resist sharing with you! She said it was super easy to do, and would be a great gift to bring to a party. Best part is, you get to play with cotton candy! Mmmm.

Here’s what you need:

  1. Small – Medium plastic baggies – you could probably use ziplocks or sandwich bags, but I think she found these ones at a dollar store which look better. They don’t close, but you end up sealing them shut with staples anyways. I’d estimate these to be about 5″ wide.
  2. Cotton Candy – buy a few packs of one flavor or variety sold at places like Target, Wal-Mart, and dollar stores.
  3. “Like” The Idea Room on FB for their free Cotton Bunny Tail printable you’ll use to top off each bag! Click on previous downloads and you should see them. While you’re at it, I’d appreciate if you’d “Like” Style Trials on Facebook too. 🙂

From there, it’s super easy! Just take the amount of cotton candy you want, and lightly mold it into a flattened ball shape with your clean (ha, yessss clean) hands. Put it in the bag, fold the top of the bag over two or three times (if it doesn’t zip closed already), then fold the printable over the top of the bag and attach with one staple on each side. Here’s a close-up…

Adorable, right?

This is another cute version of a different cotton candy Bunny Tail gift with free printables. This one requires jars, so may be a little more expensive to make.

Easter is only a few days away, so hop to it!

Candy Colors, Pastel, and Snakeskin Print

Spring is here, and that means pastels and candy colors are sweetening up the stores! Try mixing candy colors/pastels with a snakeskin print accessory (or piece of clothing) to balance out the sweetness a bit. Limit it to one snakeskin printed item per outfit so you don’t overkill it.

I especially like this look mixed with coral, mint green, pale blues, lavender, or even lace texture! Here’s the Style Trials inspiration board:

Snakeskin, Pastels, and Candy Combos

Astr lace cocktail dress / Metropolis mint dress / Joie sweater / Blue jacket / Rare London sequin bodycon skirt, $51 / Tulle skirt, $26 / American Eagle Outfitters / Pour La Victoire pumps / Rachel Zoe / Blink platform shoes, $76 / Dolce & Gabbana colorful handbag, $1,445 / Clutch / UNEARTHED imitation jewelry / GUESS bracelet / Coach bracelet jewelry / Mint earrings / Tory Burch stud earrings / Essie nail polish, $12 / Mint Green Stripe Short Paper Milkshake Straws | Milkshake Straws |… / Maxi colar ovais candy colors / Essie Camera, $15
You may have noticed me posting on instagram a few key pieces I picked up myself!

Pastel nails of course are still really popular too, and tend to look great on all skin tones.
This style combo is a fresh take for Spring, and especially for upcoming Easter. But remember, you don’t want to look like an Easter egg, so limit yourself to a few key pieces, mix in some neutrals (nude, white, black, and/or metallics), and toughen it up with a print like snakeskin.

Poppy Nail Art for Valentine’s Day

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a BIG fan of celebrating the holidays. Any excuse to be festive is enough for me! With that, I’m dedicating this nail art tutorial to upcoming Valentine’s Day. : -)

Style Trials Vday Nail Art Tutorial

Checkout my video for the tutorial on how to achieve this two-tone, romantic Valentine’s nail art. I love the poppy colors!

Valentine’s Nail Art

Products Used:

  • Zoya Nail Polish, color Kara
  • Zoya Nail Polish, color Jewell
  • White Nail Art Pen
  • Regular Tape

Like I showed in the video, you could even stop at just the two-tone nail art shading part, which would give you a poppy Spring look instead. But I think adding the white details and little heart help make it more romantic for something specific like Valentine’s.

You can do this type of look with any colors, so get creative! Don’t have the colors you want or nail art pens?  Checkout the options at Ulta, and use this Ulta 20% off ANY product coupon. It even works on sale and clearance items, and is good till 2/16/13!

Fantasy Makeup Halloween Tutorial

A few weeks back, I asked you to vote on which Halloween makeup look you wanted to see most. We had a clear winner!

Checkout my tutorial below. This would be the perfect makeup look for any girly, glam, or fantasy type of costume. I’m thinking fairies, mermaids, butterflies, princesses, even 80’s or disco since I used a blue/pink combo.

Vote for the Halloween Makeup Look You Want to See!

I love dressing up and themes, so Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! I know there are a ton of costumes out there, but you’ll want to make sure you complete the look with the right makeup/hair. Since this usually falls outside the norm of your everyday makeup, I want to do a fun tutorial or two on some Halloween looks! Based on the most popular choices, I’ve narrowed it down to 5 options and want your feedback! 🙂

Please vote for your favorite Halloween makeup look (or looks, you can select multiple choices) you’d like to see on Style Trials. I’ll keep the poll open until about mid-October, then create some how-to looks based on the most popular choices. You can pick your favorite selection (or selections) to vote for once a day. Thanks for voting!
